Who pays for Police & Fire protection?

The City of Freeland would pay for these services. Many new cities (17 have been created in the last decade in the Puget Sound area) contract out these services initially. It is expected that this would be our initial direction.

Who takes over street maintenance?

Street maintenance will be the responsibility of the city of Freeland. This responsibility will be met by either crating our own public works department or perhaps by subcontracting such services out to an existing entity. Many new cities will contract such work out to the County for some period of time.

Who will own the Library?

Sno-Isle Library System has recently taken over ownership and mgmt responsibility from Friends of Library. 1200 sq ft to be added, construction starting this Summer.

Who will own Freeland Park?

This is an issue that would have to be explored with the Port of South Whidbey and Island County Parks department.

Will we need to build our own schools?

This is an issue that will need to be explored with the South Whidbey School District. As student populations decline, smaller, more local facilities might be a better answer.
